The Ad Campaign
When I was growing up in South Texas J. Frank Dobie was a frequent visitor. These were days when he was still roaming Texas looking for good stories for his books and newspaper columns. My mother was in one of his first English classes when she was attending the University of Texas at Austin and there were many family connections to the Dobie family as well - so we were all close friends. And our house was his informal headquarters when he was in South Texas - sometimes he would appear or disappear with no notice - and that was fine with us all.
We were always thrilled when he showed up because we knew there would be great stories around the dinner table - and it usually meant we would have fried venison as well - his favorite (and mine), homemade biscuits and mesquite honey.
His book that affected me the most was “The Longhorns” and I would sit for hours listening to his stories about the cattle and the cowboys. It rang true with me because my grandfather told many similar stories about his experiences driving cattle to Kansas.
So when we decided to run an ad campaign to promote our longhorn herd, it was natural that we went back to Dobie’s words that he crafted or collected from the cowboys.
Hope you enjoy the series.
